Tornado Are Champions!
After last weekend’s results, it was all but inevitable that Tornado Moscow Oblast would be champions of the 2015-16 Women’s Hockey League season, and overwhelming probability became certainty today when Agidel Ufa were beaten 5-1 by SKIF Nizhny Novgorod. For Tornado, who play their home games in the town of Dmitrov a little bit north of Russia’s capital, it is the eighth national title — their second in a row, and fifth in the last six season.
The champions still have two games remaining, on Thursday and Friday against Biryusa Krasnoyarsk, who themselves are fighting for third place, but they can now take it easy. We may well see some members of the national team rested for these games; players like forwards Anna Shokhina, Alevtina Shtaryova, and Yelena Dergachyova, and defenders Angelina Goncharenko and Nina Pirogova (not to mention several others) can now turn their attention to the upcoming World Championship in Canada.
When the Women’s Hockey League season is fully wrapped up, we’ll recap it here at the blog, and discuss Tornado’s triumph at greater length. In the meantime, however, many congratulations to the players and staff of HK Tornado Moscow Oblast!
