KHL exhibition hockey is well underway for 2016-17 at this point, and we are about to embark on one of the more interesting parts of the league’s calendar: namely, the big pre-season tournaments.  There are several such competitions taking place between now and the beginning of the regular season on August 22nd, so read on, and we’ll take a look at the upcoming schedule!

The pre-season tournaments, it must be said, are great fun.  They are exhibition games, so not to be taken too seriously, but they do carry a certain amount of prestige above the usual “one-off” pre-season matches (I have not included those games, incidentally, but you can see a complete list organized by team here — thanks to LockstheFox for that).  Some, though not all, of the tournaments allow the fans in for free, which is a nice thing.  The games are also often streamed live on Youtube, and I would advise checking the various teams’ social media accounts and websites for more details on that.

Without further ado, the schedule — and if I have left out any tournaments involving KHL teams, please do let me know.  This page will be updated with schedule changes as need be, and I’ll add in the scores and tournament-winners as they happen (you will note that the Cup of the Governor of Nizhegorod Oblast is already underway, having begun on Monday).

That is all of the tournaments, as far as I know, that will involve KHL teams this summer.  However, there are a some other competitions worth noting.  The second-tier VHL has a full slate of exhibition games and tournaments, which you can check out here (link is in Russian).  On the junior side, the 2016 World Junior Club Cup will take place in Tatarstan (Nizhnekamsk and Naberezhnye Chelny) from August 20th to 28th, featuring youth teams from the MHL, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Last but certainly not least, from the 25th to the 28th of August, Ufa will host the second annual Agidel Cup, featuring four teams from the Women’s Hockey League.  The 2016 schedule for that tournament is as follows:

  • Aug. 25: Agidel Ufa vs. Arktik-Universitet Ukhta
  • Aug. 26: SKIF Nizhny Novgorod vs. Arktik-Universitet Ukhta
  • Aug. 27: Agidel Ufa vs. SKIF Nizhny Novgorod
  • Aug. 28: Final

Thank you for reading, and enjoy the hockey!
